Getting Back to Tooth Care Basics

Do you ever stop to count all of the options that are available to you for proper tooth care at your local grocery store or pharmacy? Well, we have not but it seems there must be at least a hundred, maybe. You would think that, with all of those choices and different tooth care technologies available to you that things would be a little bit different. But there are millions of people, in the US at least, who have chronic dental problems. The truth is that business for the dental care field is going like gangbusters. Actually, we think proper dental care is relatively easy to learn about and to practice. At the end of the day, though, they are still your teeth and it is still your smile.

The debate surrounding the fluoride in water, toothpaste and mouth care products is a long standing and extensive one. Even your annual dental cleaning includes a “bath” for your teeth in a gooey tray of fluoride paste. People who subscribe to alternative medicine and natural health care, though, think fluoride is harmful. We’re not going to debate that. So, if you are comfortable with using it, then know that fluoride is touted to prevent cavities. So make sure that you double-check your toothpaste to be sure that there is fluoride contained within it because several fluoride-free toothpastes have been invented to appease the other crowd. Do what you think is the right thing to do: let your conscience be your guide. Most people already know that it is important to floss when you want to care with your mouth. We always hear our dentists telling us to floss each day and this is solid advice. There are some best practices techniques to follow when flossing. Obviously you want to do a good job while refraining from causing damage to your gums while you do it. When putting the floss between your teeth, be gentle as you move it back and forth. Slide it up and down on your teeth, don’t force it up under your gum line. To make sure you’ve correctly oriented the floss, pull it around the edges of each tooth as you floss it.

Hot Teeth Whitening Topic

Let’s talk about the national obsession (in the US) with teeth whitening products. First, did you know that the natural color of every tooth is a slight yellow color? Honest to God: white is not the color your teeth are naturally. It is important to be careful with this so that you don’t accidentally cause serious dental problems later in life. The main ingredient in these products is peroxide and all that does is bleach your teeth. It can cause serious damage to the enamel in your teeth. When done often enough it is possible to lose your enamel altogether. After that it is nothing but dental problems from that point on out.

Very many people subject their teeth to all manner of cavity-causing foods and drinks. People who want healthier smiles need to take regular and reliable preventative measures to protect their teeth.
