Whitening Your Teeth With Crest White Strips

Crest White Strips were the first tooth whitening strip system that were introduced to the general public almost a decade ago.  For people looking for an easy to use, inexpensive and convenient way to whiten their teeth, Crest White Strips are an excellent option.

Using Crest White Strips

Crest White Strips are small, very thin strips of plastic that are placed on the front top and bottom teeth.  They are covered on one side with a small concentration of hydrogen peroxide which cleans and whitens the teeth with regular use over a period of one of two weeks.  Crest recommends that strips be used twice a day for a period of approximately 30 minutes.

Crest Systems

Crest has several different versions of their White Strips.  These include White Strips Classic, which has a 6 percent concentration of hydrogen peroxide and is recommended for two weeks of use for maximum effectiveness.

White Strips Premium and White Strips Premium Plus have a higher concentration of peroxide – 10 percent – and are recommended for one week for maximum effectiveness.

With all versions of Crest White Strips, if you use all of the strips kit you will achieve the maximum effectiveness of the product, but if you find that you have reached your desired whiteness level before using all of the strips in your kit, you can stop using them.

Crest WhiteStrips versus Trays

There are several popular teeth whitening systems available at drug stores today that are readily available and affordable, particularly when compared to getting dental whitening treatments through your dentist.  Besides tooth whitening strips, the other popular system is whitening trays.

Whitening trays are one size fits all trays that are filled with a professional teeth whitening gel that is similar to the hydrogen peroxide used on Crest White Strips.  Once the gel is placed in the tray, the tray is placed in the mouth and fitted to the teeth.

There are several disadvantages to using this type of tray system.  First, many people find the trays uncomfortable, finding that they make the jaw and mouth hurt.  Another disadvantage is that the trays are bulky and make it difficult to speak.  They are also obvious and others see clearly that you are using them.

By comparison, whitening strips are very thin and easy to use.  They are comfortable and it is possible to speak and even socialize while wearing them.

Side Effects

There are two common side effects from Crest White Strips.  The first is tooth sensitivity during the whitening period.  This side effect can be addressed by using sensitive toothpaste for a short period of time until the sensitivity resides.  The other possible side effect is gum irritation.  This can happen if the strip is placed incorrectly high on the gum line and the gums are exposed to the hydrogen peroxide in the strip.  Gum irritation will reside quickly after the strip is removed and rinsing the mouth after removing the strips will also help remove an excess peroxide left on the teeth and in the mouth.
