Natural Teeth Whitening With Baking Soda And Hydrogen Peroxide

Your smile is the first thing that most people notice about you.  Having a bright white smile can make you feel more confident and even more outgoing.  There are ways to improve and whiten your smile without spending a great deal of money, which is a definite plus in today’s economy.

What Causes Tooth Discoloration

Teeth naturally change color as we age.  They can become slightly yellow or brownish, depending on your diet and personal habits.  For example, if you drink a lot of tea, coffee or soda, then your teeth will likely become slightly darker.  Also drinking red wine or other dark liquids will result in discoloration of your teeth, as will tobacco use.

Other causes of tooth discoloration result in changes in tooth color that are not on the surface enamel, but are instead from the inside of the tooth and travel outward.  These changes come as a result of certain illnesses and medical treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation treatments for cancer.  Also medications like tetracycline or other medications.  Also, chronic drug use of methamphetamine or other drugs can result in changes in tooth color and even other dramatic damage to your teeth.

Natural Teeth Whitening

Instead of spending lots of money going to a cosmetic dentist and spending a great deal of money on a teeth whitening process, there are ways to whiten your teeth by simply using common items that you probably have in your bathroom or kitchen cabinet – if you do not have these items, you can pick them up at your local grocery store for very little money.

  • Baking Soda – Baking soda is a mild abrasive and can be used to brush your teeth to scrub away surface stains and discolorations.  It will kill acids in your mouth that are damaging to your teeth and will also kill bacteria that are damaging to your teeth and mouth.

  • Hydrogen PeroxideHydrogen peroxide teeth whitening is a natural oxygenator when you lightly rinse your mouth with it.  If you take a small amount of peroxide in your mouth, you will find that it feels bubbly and fizzy in your mouth.  This is the oxygenation process happening as the peroxide reaches in between your teeth where you toothbrush cannot reach.  Do not swallow the peroxide!

  • Combining Baking Soda and Hydrogen Peroxide – Combining a small amount of peroxide with a large spoonful of baking soda will create a paste that you can easily use to brush your teeth.  After you have finished brushing your teeth with this paste, rinse your mouth thoroughly and then brush your teeth with regular toothpaste so that you will get the benefit of fluoride to rebuild tooth enamel and protect your teeth.

If you would rather simply use toothpaste to brush your teeth and want whitening benefits, you can choose a toothpaste that has whitening abrasives or baking soda and/or hydrogen peroxide as active ingredients.  These toothpastes are readily available at your local grocery store or drug store.
